Fake iPhone Lines: Does It Really Surprise You?

Reports showed up yesterday that Orange, scared of low demand, has hired actors to stand in lines for the iPhone in Poland. It was in rumor stage at some point, but now Orange has actually admitted to Reuters that the lines were, indeed, fake.

Well, does that really surprise anyone? Did you really believe that everything Apple makes people wait pointlessly, spending nights and even weeks in front of stores to get a product which will probably be easily available a couple of hours later? I’m not familiar with the US consumer mentality so I can’t comment on that, but in Europe…no way.

Sure, there are lines, sometimes. I remember waiting in line for World of Warcraft here in Zagreb. But that was different: there was actually a good chance that you’re going to miss out on your copy if you’re not among the first couple hundred buyers. iPhone in Poland, on the other hand, will definitely not get sold out in the first couple of hours, so let’s get realistic: no one wants to wait in a line if it’s not necessary.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it how Apple’s product placement division makes sure that every cool movie features only Macs, adn I actually enjoy the hype – to some extent – around their products. But let’s not forget that most of it is just good PR, nothing more.
